1. Run Terminal from Utilities Folder under Applications

2. Type Purge at the command prompt and press return

3. Quit Terminal

1.  Run Disk Utility from Utilities folder

2.  Select to create Disk Image from Folder under File menu

3.  Select the Folder to be protected (e.g. Password)

4.  Key in the name of the folder (or use the same name) and select where the folder will be located

5.  Select “read/write” for Image Format and 128-bit AES encryption

6.  Enter the password and DO NOT select “Remember password in my keychain”

7.  The protected folder will be created in the format of a dmg file (e.g. Password.dmg).  Double clicking it will prompt for password to unlock the folder.

NOTE:

• The original folder (e.g. Password) still exists.   It can be deleted now from the computer or be saved somewhere else as a backup just in case
• After unlocked, the folder can be used as any ordinary folder and all files stored inside are password protected
• One can also create file aliases (shortcuts) to directly access the files inside

8.  Clicking “Eject” will lock the folder

NOTE:
Mac OS doesn’t come with many options for users to protect their folders and files.   This method creates a disk image with password option to be used as a protected folder.   Although it is still not the best solution, it is relatively easy to implement and most important it is free.

Here’s how to quickly make incompatible addons compatible:

1. Locate extensions folder under the Profile folder of Thunderbird

2. Rename the file-extension of the addon to be modified from xpi to zip

3. Unzip the file and look for “install.rdf” inside the unzipped folder

4. Open the file with a text editor and edit the number of <em:maxVersion> to Thunderbird’s current version or higher

5. Save the file and then zip the whole folder

6. Rename the file-extension back to xpi from zip

7. The addon will now be compatible to the new version of Thunderbird

NOTE:
•   Although the addon can be used now, there may still be a chance of features incompatibility.
•   Same principle applies to make incompatible Firefox addon compatible.
• Location of Firefox Extensions is:
\Users\<user>\Library\Application Support\Firefox\Profiles\uzc25jg1.default\extensions

•   Entering the Mac’s serial number will show the service status of it

•   To find the Mac’s serial number, Click More Info from About This Mac

Like many others, my desktop is a Win-7 based PC and my portable is a Mac.  Since I have a free Dropbox account, I just configure Thunderbird to put the mail data under the Dropbox folder on both machines.  Mails received on either platform will then be automatically synced to the other.

NOTE:

• Thunderbird MUST NOT be run simultaneously on both machines; otherwise, mail data will be messed up.
• The sync process may take from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the size of the data and the speed of the network.
• Therefore, it is better to wait a few moments before opening up Thunderbird on the other platform until Dropbox’s Files Sync action is completed.

Actually, to uninstall an app on Mac is quite simple — just Move it to the Trash will do.

But to ensure no “tails” are left behind after the uninstallation, one can install a free App called AppCleaner.  It not only helps uninstall an app but also can effectively remove “tails” associated with the app being trashed.

1. Turn off Wifi and unplug network connection;

2. Go to  /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

3. Rename  preferences.plist  to  preferences.plist.bak  (just in case it is needed)

4. Reboot and a new preferences.plist will be created with the network configuration reset to factory default.

Note:
Don’t mix this Machine Name up with Short Name and Full Name.   Machine Name is the name you want to call your Mac and to be shown to others in a network environment.

Short Name and Full Name are the names of the user of the Mac.  These two are used to identify who is the user, and to define and create account information on the Mac.

1. Run  Terminal

2. Type  sudo rm ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db
               to remove the problematic Launchpad database

3. Enter user password to permit change

4. Type  sudo killall Dock
_             to recreate a new database

5. Exit  Terminal

A free app called Launchpad-control can do above resetting with just a few clicks.
